Come Together: It’s Time For A Political Alliance

The British Labour Party is being encouraged to form a progressive alliance with smaller liberal and progressive parties who policies lean more left of centre to prevent a future win for the conservatives party in the 2024 General Election. With the Liberal Democrat’s likely under such electoral alliance and coalition would want to see electoral reform. This would likely to benefit parties like The Green Party and The Liberal Democrat’s as recent polling data projects their seats share would decrease dramatically. The smaller parties would contest its in the best interests to ousting a Conservative government after what would be the parties 14 years in power. The first five were in coalition of the Liberal Democrat’s whom as a party has had troublesome challenges to rebuild their party as a progressive one after the coalition which lead to austerity.

Starmer who has only been labour leader for less than a year has already been able to turn the tide of the parties polling in recent polls. Marking an end to the Corbynism age but with many struggling to see what the Labour Party stands for making it difficult for the party to start rebuilding relations with the Liberal Democrat’s relations that the Liberal Democrat’s want to see a return to the days of strong leaders of like Tony Blair (Former Labour Leader and PM) and Charles Kennedy (Former Liberal Democrat’s leader) both had a strong relationship in opposition which could be a factor of their electoral success the days where the Liberal Democrat’s had 62 seats with the Labour Party had 355 seats in that 2005 General Election. Both parties suffered a blow in the Snap General Election in 2019 Labour returning with 203 MPs and Liberal Democrat’s returning with only 11 MPs. A smaller progressive representation in Parliament where only one Green MP remains Caroline Lucas representing The Green Party in Westminster.

Recent polling showed it could be much worse for Ed Davey entering the next general election returning with only 2 MPs. Some will wonder can the party win again or are they cast aside as a party.

A recent call for such alliance and collaboration from progressive parties has been reported in the New European written by Adrian Zorzut stated a call has come from the chair of a pro European pressure group Stephen Dorrel. Dorrel stating that PM Johnson has been able to use the first past the post electoral system for his own political gain and force a will on the British people to act with force using an archaic electoral system. Formerly a Conservative party member then deflecting for short lived political party Change U.K. then most recently Liberal Democrat’s consistently opposed the to Brexit. However with some skeptism from Davey leader of the Liberal Democrat’s of an endorsement of Starmer as prime minister. The party has already found moments of disagreement in recent weeks with Starmer’s Labour Party voting for Johnson’s Brexit deal and Davey’s Liberal Democrat’s voted against. The Liberal Democrat’s have questioned whether Starmer has done enough to challenge the government on the handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Dorrel calling for electoral reform as the current electoral system has been unfair to voters which the labour patty should she that fails itself as it has only in seventy years won elections with three leaders of the party Atlee, Wilson and Blair. Coming from a liberal conservative shows how this Conservative government has lead liberal conservatives on the centre right to be politically homeless.

Bright Green a radical independent media for a democratic green movement stated how the compass green network could achieve this and to put the green parties environmental policies into what would be hoped to achieved from such alliance. Stating that Labour Party is beginning to see how it can’t achieve a win with working with other parties in hopes that this alliance can achieve electoral reform to a proportional representational system.

On the same week that the Green Compass Network was reported on by Bright Green Sienna Rogers reported on the announcement of Labour Compass Network a new cross party progressive alliance group similar to such compass groups launched by the Green Party and Liberal Democrat’s. This compass group launched is set up to support cross party work at every level of the Labour Party. Clive Lewis (Labour MP, Layla Moran (Liberal Democrat MP) and Caroline Lucas (Green Party MP) have already shown enthusiasm and endorsed such movements on working to deliver a progressive majority at the next general election in 2024.

Though recent polls on a few occasions have shown the Labour Party polling higher than the conservatives this data has been inconsistent to show that confidently Kier Starmer would win an outright victory in a future general election. Even though the general election that could land Starmer to Downing Street. It is clear that the Labour Party must show a level of humility to work to build bridges and a stronger progressive opposition that is ready to govern and willing to take on the challenges of delivering electoral reform if he wants to move the party forward to greater future successes
