Wake Up and Smell the coffee, put the smoke out and deliver climate action now!
The twenties will be defined as being one that is political active not dormant. Recent political crisis have lead people apathetic with the establishment and want to see bold change. In her New Years Day tweet climate activist Greta Thunberg wished for ‘the year of awakening and real bold change and lets all continue the never ending fight for the living planet’. Climate action must be urgent if we going to save our planet Greta warns.
Watching the fireworks display in London from my home as the clocked strike twelve I witnessed a moment of great hypocrisy which informed me of how we aren’t taking the matters of climate action far seriously enough. Especially when people are so tied up as seeing the fireworks display organised by London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan as far too woke and liberal with nods to the Black Lives Matter movement, praise of the NHS and what I saw was hypocritical was the message from David Attenborough. The veteran nature broadcaster and climate campaigner a national treasure words was featured in this years fireworks display that ushered in the new year. What I witnessed was what I thought was hypocrisy and rather telling. Seeing Britain’s most polluted city who supposedly want to become a greener city made a statement on climate change and featured Attenborough’s warning whilst plumes of smoke polluted and lit up across the sky of London. To me that says it all.
We aren’t taking climate action seriously.
It was only last year that Australia was suffering its worse wildfires posing a threat to many people’s homes and many species of wildlife across Australia a fire so big the smoke could be seen from the international space station. Later that year that year wildfires could be seen from San Francisco from the international space station. Orange skies a backdrop to the Golden Gate Bridge looking like a scene out of Mad Max. Last New Years the red skies that dominated the beaches of Australia as many Aussies fled their homes. In fear as wildfires the nation dystopian manner.
Australia’s government didn’t take the flames as a red flag and a reason to cancel its multi million fireworks display which would contribute to the pollution from the wildfires. A slap in the face for many telling how governments unwilling to take the crisis as serious.
London’s fireworks display showed how bizarre 2020 was. I saw the fireworks followed with a message on climate change was ironic and much satirical. It felt as if going on a diet to reduce sugar eating two reduced sugar chocolate bars when normally eat one. Attempting to do something to prove a point by making matters work.
This year we must do more to be pro active on environmentalist issues. Joe Biden once enters office as president of America will try to reverse Trumps climate denialism policies to work to acting on climate change. Whilst we must encourage other governments to go further and change our own behaviours. Many politicians this year will utter the words “we face an unprecedented task of rebuilding the economy. We need to build back better” we must do our best to tell our politicians to build back greener and counter disinformation.
